Why does Apple not allow real money poker on the iPad?
Update: It is now possible to play real money poker on the iPad. A new browser based iPad poker room has launched, that has been designed specifically for the iPad. Click Here for full details.
To answer this question, I think it’s important to differentiate between the 2 types of online poker. Most online poker players prefer to download and install a poker rooms client in order to play online poker. However, some poker rooms like UB.com, also offer an Instant Play / No Download version of their poker client, that allows you to play real money poker from any computer with a browser. Firstly, lets deal with the Download/Install version.
Why can't I download and install online poker software to the iPad
The iPad runs on the same Operating System as the iPhone, which is a closed system. This means that you can only download and install applications from the iTunes App Store. Apple currently has a policy of denying approval to any poker apps that involve real money betting.
Apple have, however, recently relaxed their anti-gambling policy to allow sweepstakes, contest and lottery apps. Although this is a positive development, it may still be some time before real money poker apps are available for the iPad, due to the uncertain legal situation regarding online poker in the U.S.
Why can’t I play real money poker in the iPad browser?
Poker rooms like UB.com offer browser based “No Download” versions of their poker clients that can be played on any PC or Mac that has an internet connection. These scaled down versions of their native poker apps are useful if you want play a few hands without having to download or install any software.
Unfortunately, these “Instant Play” versions require Flash support, which the iPad does not offer. Apple have refused to allow Flash on their mobile devices because they believe it is a resource hog and significantly reduces the iPad’s batter life.
