iPhone Overtakes Blackberry To Become No.1 Smartphone
By Samantha Lambert | January 6, 2011
The latest study carried out by Nielsen into smartphone OS marketshare in the US, revealed this week that Apple’s iPhone operarting system (iOS) has finally overtaken RIM’s Blackberry to become the most popular smartphone operating system in the US.
According to the November 2010 data, Blackberry RIM’s market share dropped from 33.9% in June to 26.1% in November, a sizeable drop in such a short timeframe. Apple on the other hand now holds 28.6% market share in the U.S., up 0.7% since October.
The most striking part of the research is the speed at which the smartphone market is growing as a whole. 45% of new phones purchased in November 2010 were smartphones, compared to 34% in June 2010, a remarkable increase in such a short space of time.
Even though the iPhone and Blackberry are currently the two most popular smartphone operating systems in the US, there are still very few real money poker options open for either device. iPhone users can currently play real money poker at Switch Poker via the Safari browser, but there seems to be little possibility of native poker apps appearing in the App Store in the near future.
Bwin are currently the only poker room offering real money poker on a handful of Blackberry phones. This, however, is likely to change in the near future as Blackberry plan to support Flash in newer models. This will give their owners to play browser based versions of poker apps, such as Rush Poker Mobile.
iPhone owners may need to wait a little longer, as Apple look set to continue their standoff with Adobe in relation to Flash support.
