The Best Android, iPhone & iPad Poker Apps of 2010
Despite the growing popularity of Androids & iPhones smartphones and tablet devices like the iPad, the major poker rooms have still remained very cautious when it comes to entering the mobile poker market.
Progress in the development of mobile poker apps in 2010 has certainly been hampered by the lack of Flash support in the iPhone and iPad, as well as Apples refusal to allow real money poker apps in their App Store. However, despite these setbacks, the last quarter of 2010 saw the launch of 2 new mobile poker offerings, catering for both Androids and iPhone / iPad users.
Switch Poker’s arrival in October finally made real money poker on iPads and iPhones a reality, while the launch of Full Tilt Poker’s first poker app, Rush Poker Mobile, meant you could now play a few hands poker on your Android device.
As 2010 draws to a close, we thought we’d put together a quick summary of various real money poker options available to mobile players at the end of the year.
RUSH POKER MOBILE
Full Tilt wisely decided to develop their first poker app for the Google Android plaform, which is the fastest growing mobile OS and is expected to become the 2nd most popular smarphone OS by 2012. The Rush Poker Mobile app works on Android Froyo smartphones and devices as well as any mobile device that runs Flash Version 10.1 or higher. As the name suggests, Rush Poker Mobile is based on Full Tilt’s innovative and fast paced Rush Poker format.
Since Google no longer allow gambling apps in the Android Market, you will need to download the app directly from the Full Tilt Poker website. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, visit our Rush Poker Mobile App Install section.
SWITCH POKER MOBILE
Switch Poker launced back in October and is still the only poker room that can be played on iPads and iPhones. Switch Poker is played from iPhone and iPad browsers without the need to download any software, which means they circumvent Apples strict anti gambling policies.
They have managed to get around the lack of Flash supports on iPads and iPhones by developing the mobile poker room using HTML5. The room may not be as slick or feature rich as rooms developed using flash, but if you want to play real money poker on your new iPad or iPhone, then Swith Poker is currently your only option. Visit our Swith Poker section for full details.
BWIN MOBILE POKER
Bwin boasts the largest mobile poker network at present (although we predict Full Tilt Poker will overtake them very shortly). BWINS offer WAP powered mobile poker that will work on many older BlackBerry, Motorola, Nokia, Siemens and Samsung phones. For a full list of all supported mobile poker devices, visit out our Bwin Mobile Poker section.
BETSSONS / REDKINGS MOBILE POKER
Betsson & Redkings Poker also offer basic WAP mobile poker apps that work on a wide variety of Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sony and Siemens smartphones. If you don’t own a fancy new smartphone but you still want to play real money mobile poker on the go, then these are the mobile poker rooms for you. For a full list of supported devices, check out our Betsson Mobile Poker and Redkings Mobile Poker sections.
GOODBYE CAKE POKER MOBILE
2010 sadly saw the end of mobile poker at Cake Poker. The popular poker room had offered a real money poker app for the Windows Mobile platform, but withdrew its option back in October, saying that they expected to re-enter the mobile poker market at a later date.
We predict that 2011 will be a bumper year for mobile poker, which should see a flurry of new mobile poker options, including one by PokerStars, who are sure to follow their main rivals, Full Tilt Poker, into the mobile poker arena.
News on the poker apps and mobile poker rooms can always be found at our Mobile Poker section.
