California Moves To Legalize Online Poker
By Sebastian Hawkes | June 4, 2010
Online poker looks set to become a reality in the State of California, as it legislature moves to legalize online poker within states borders. Senator Rod Wright introduced Senate Bill 1485 on Tuesday, that would see a limited number of California based gambling companies being granted a 5 year license to operate online poker rooms for state residents.
The California based poker websites would be required to pay 20% of their revenues to California. The move is seen as an attempt to tackle California’s massive debt problem, which is projected to reach $19 billion by the end of the next fiscal year.
Californian poker players may be dismayed to discover that this draft of the bill would make it illegal for them to play at any other poker rooms, however, the bill may change significantly before it is introduced into law.
It is estimated that California residents spend approx. $300 million on poker websites, which has up until now been flowing out of the California economy, to offshore gambling poker companies.
